One of the benefits of charter schools is the ability for students to grow and develop over their time at school. At BASIS, we call some of the traits and characteristics students pick up “The BASIS Effect.” Internally, we talk about how we can recognize a BASIS student. This is not an indistinguishable sameness, but a recognizable and diverse individuality centered on several common traits we see every day in all grades.
BASIS Students Are Known for Their:
Self Confidence. In their journey through BASIS, our teachers are charged with ensuring students understand the material and each individual is performing at his/her personal best. When this problem-solving happens, students gain the confidence that they can do it. Early on, we help students to think critically and problem solve to build confidence. They are able to apply those tools in making presentations and participating in activities that encourage the growth of confidence.
Individuality and Self Expression. We encourage our students to be themselves and to be tolerant of others. We do not have uniforms for that very reason, as we want students to be able to express their personality and beliefs without fear of retribution.
Teamwork. The world requires that we be able to work with others in a nonjudgmental and collaborative way. As early as Kindergarten, we have students participate in activities that promote teamwork. A BASIS student exhibits the traits of an effective team member in and outside of school – positive interactions and teamwork on the soccer field often stem from the team presentation a student made in class.
Leadership. BASIS students have and take a variety of paths to learning and portraying leadership. They design extracurricular activities, present their proposals to decision makers and then run the club or activity. They lead our Honor Societies and compete nationwide at Math Decathlons. Many of our students have built businesses while in college and beyond. BASIS students are leaders now and of the future.
